It goes by the tag line 'next level chicken' and as you bite through crunchy coating to reach tender meat, it's hard to argue.

Its name is a cheeky nod to the often dubious fast food outlets that dominate high streets up and down the country, but The Chicken Shop's offer and price point is firmly a cut above.

With outlets in Baker Street, Notting Hill, Soho and Islington they've recently colonised Camden High Street and could be set to take over the world.

Exposed brick, street art, bright lighting, loud-ish music and melamine tables mean this is not a spot to linger. But if you are looking for a quick stop on your way to a gig at Koko or The Jazz Cafe it's a winner.

We started with knock-out Korean wings; super tender, with a pleasing sweet sour tang, and scattering of spring onions, dipped into a tastebud-slapping samurai sauce. At 75p a pop, the dips are worth the price for dunking tenders, wings or fries. Choose from a deep smoky barbecue, sriracha sour cream, plain buttermilk, or the punchy samurai.

The burgers - soft buns, encasing crispy chicken - with various permutations of pickles, and spicing, range from £6.95-£8.95 and borrow flavours from Asia and South America.

There's a Spicy korean vegan, a Cali Hot Chick with chipotle, hot lime sauce, guac and cheese, the Spice up your Life, with Korean slaw and Samurai sauce, and our Spicy Sichuan with a sweet, peppery glaze, kewpie mayo, and pickled cucumbers - they were swiftly consumed. This Is Local London: The Chicken Shop has outlets in Islington, Baker Street and now CamdenThe Chicken Shop has outlets in Islington, Baker Street and now Camden (Image: The Chicken Shop)

Fries come plain (£2.95) or dressed (£4.95) with a fruity Sri Lankan curry sauce, (Gunpowder) cheese, or K Fries with a Korean glaze and kimchee. I wan'st sure about the sogginess of the chips by the end, but the kimchee was brightly flavoured, and like the house slaw in buttermilk ranch dressing, felt healthy, tasty, and freshly made. In short, not like fast food at all

Drinks range from bottomless soda to Signature Brew beers and shakes. The Victoria: 'cake in a shake' would serve well as dessert, but I preferred my malted milk, a creamy, chocolatey delight with a hug of Horlicks.
