Our skin acts as a barrier against the world, so much so that it can get tired fending off pollution and stress. Not to mention that our skin’s health has a direct influence on our wellbeing and mood, which is why it's critical to know how to take care of it.

Today we're discussing oily skin, so let's take a look at the causes of acne and blemishes. When pores get congested, acne develops. What clogs your pores determines the sort of acne you develop, and how mild or severe it is. It is particularly frequent throughout adolescence because of greater levels of hormones that might cause an increase in the size of the skin's sebaceous glands. These glands begin to produce more oil, which can block pores. Additionally, most individuals will experience acne at some point during their life, and some of us may have no idea how to manage it!

The best way to maintain healthy skin is by practising an efficient skincare routine. You may have heard the general tips, such as ‘drink water and you’ll always have clear skin,’ or, ‘get some more sleep.’ Yes, hydration and sleep is essential, but these alone will not miraculously improve your skin overnight. Consistency is key in maintaining an effective skincare routine. Implement a healthy sleep pattern, stay hydrated...and choose the best skincare regimen for your skin type.

If you're anything like me, then you'll know that oily skin is a nightmare. I've tried everything from harsh scrubs and chemical exfoliators to pore strips and even resorting to layers and layers of makeup. The problem is that most of these solutions accomplished nothing more than temporarily concealing the issue. They didn't solve my problem; they only masked it for a few hours/days/weeks until my skin returned to its previous state: oily with blemishes! At that point, finding a solution seemed nearly unattainable.

But one day, inspiration struck: my parents work in the health sector with chemists in order to create naturally- derived skincare and haircare products that treat specific concerns. They saw a need for a solution for oily skin and decided to develop it. After 2 years of them working behind the scenes with dermatologists and chemists, a 3-step regimen for oily, acne-prone skin was finally developed: the clinically- tested Happy Skin Range. It consists of three products – a cleanser, toner and blemish gel – to target different factors that contribute to oily skin like excess oil production, enlarged pores and inflammation.

I've tried many different skincare products, but I think the most important thing is to develop a routine that works for you. For example, if your skin tends to be dry and lacking moisture, your routine will be a lot more different to someone who has combination or oily skin.

For my oily skin, I follow the three-step skincare regimen I mentioned earlier (foam cleanser, toner, and blemish gel) every morning and evening. I can't emphasise enough how important it is to not touch your face all the time! All of that oil and bacteria can clog your pores even more, so don't pick at that pimple! Regardless of how effective your skincare is, if you don't maintain a routine throughout the day there won't be much difference at all. Because healthy skin is a journey- something that we can learn to do because it's a vital means of self-care.

We’ve normalised using so many different products a day because of them being overhyped or bought impulsively- turns out, too much isn't really a good thing for your skin—it's just confusing it, and making it more susceptible to breakouts. Plus, there are so many different kinds of products that are marketed as being able to do the same thing...but, they never live up to what they promise. Because the ingredients rarely line up with the benefits you want to achieve from the product.

So what if we took away all those acne quick- fix options? What if we boiled down skincare to something simple and effective? A routine, a habit and a lifestyle.

Because at the end of it all, healthy skin is happy skin—and that's the goal!
