A man has been arrested after police found a knife and cannabis during a stop and search in Woolwich.

Officers were on patrol when they noticed a man was hanging around on the stairs that lead from Gorman Road to Marine Drive.

The man was paying attention to the officers and police said that he appeared to change route when he saw them.

Officers believed that the man was in the area to buy drugs so drove to Francis Street and detained him for search.

Police say the suspect admitted that he had a small amount of cannabis hidden in his boxer shorts.

It is also alleged that the man was carrying a knife.

He was arrested on suspicion of possession of cannabis and on suspicion of an offence under points and blades.

Greenwich Police tweeted: “#Arrested “1 Arrested for points and blades & possession of cannabis “Fantastic work by the Greenwich Integrated enforcement the impact knife crime has on families and communities is massive and patrols and arrests like these are taking knifes off the street.

“Officers were on duty in the Woolwich SE18 are when they noticed a male loitering on the stairs that lead from Gorman Road to Marine Drive.

“They believed that the man was there to buy drugs.

“The male was paying a lot of attention to officers as he had initially gone to walk down the stairs onto Gorman Road but upon seeing the officers, changed route.

“Officers drove around to where she thought the male was heading and another noticed the male and detained him for a search on Francis Street.

“The male then disclosed to officers that he had a small amount of cannabis inside his boxer shorts.

“The male was then subsequently arrested for points and blades and possession of cannabis.”
