POUNDLAND has confirmed the reopening date of its branch in Plumstead after it was left damaged by a fire.

The store in Plumstead High Street temporarily closed after a fire broke out on April 17.

The branch will now reopen on Saturday, October 1 at 9am after undergoing refurbishment which has taken five months.

A spokesperson for Poundland said the store will now include a wider range of essentials, groceries and clothing.

It will also include a revamped health and beauty, entertainment, stationery, and craft sections.

The reopening will create around 18 full and part-time jobs, according to a Poundland spokesperson.

Six fire engines and around 40 fighters tackled the blaze which broke out at 3.52pm.

The ground floor of the store was damaged by the fire.

Three women were led to safety by firefighters.

Another four adults left the flats above the store before the arrival of the brigade.

No injuries were reported following the incident.

The fire was under control just before 5.35pm.

Fire crews from Plumstead, Erith, East Greenwich and Bromley fire stations were called to the scene.

The fire is believed to have been accidental and caused by a fault within an air conditioning unit.

Poundland’s director of retail, Darren Kay, said: “We’re looking forward to reopening our doors at Plumstead High Street and welcoming back our loyal customers after a six-month separation.

“We’ve taken the opportunity to give the store a makeover to offer our shoppers more of what they want and need at Poundland’s amazing value which is more important than ever when household budgets are under so much pressure."
