Greenwich Council has said it stands in solidarity with the family of Chris Kaba following his tragic death.

The 24-year-old rapper died after a shooting in Streatham Hill on September 5.

The council said it calls for action from Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) to root out racial biases across the institution.

It said that it "fully" supports the decision to investigate the shooting as a homicide.

Leader of Greenwich Council, Anthony Okereke, said the council supports Chris' family in their fight for justice.

Okereke explained: “It is deeply disturbing that another young black man has lost his life on the streets of south London.

“No family should have to go through what Chris Kaba’s family is currently suffering.

"My thoughts and heartfelt sympathies are with them, and the Royal Borough of Greenwich adds its support to their fight for justice.”

The council said it knows "the pain and anger" incidents like Chris' shooting can cause.

Cabinet member for community safety and enforcement, Ann-Marie Cousins, said: “Chris’s family and friends have shown immense courage and composure at this time, and I continue to hold them in my thoughts and prayers.

“It's vital that this investigation is done openly and transparently to ensure accountability while also building back trust with families and communities."

The full statement from Greenwich Council said: “The Royal Borough of Greenwich extends its deepest condolences to the family of Chris Kaba following his shocking death last week.

“We join the Kaba family, and the growing number of voices across London, in calling for swift action from the Independent Office for Police Conduct to root out racial biases across the institution.

“We fully support the decision to investigate the shooting as a homicide.

“Royal Greenwich has had its own experiences with violence, so we know the pain and anger that incidents like this cause.

“Racial trauma is real and events like Chris Kaba’s death can be triggering.

“If you need mental health support, all Royal Greenwich residents can access free counselling through Bromley, Lewisham & Greenwich Mind.”
