A man assaulted and racially abused police officers after trying to rob a passenger on a tube service to Wimbledon.

The incident happened on the District line service which was running between Notting Hill Gate and Wimbledon stations on May 20.

A man on board the train tried to rob a passenger just after 8pm.

He was later identified by a woman at Wimbledon station, who pointed him out to officers.

The suspect assaulted one officer and racially abused another as he was being arrested.

A 52-year-old-man has been arrested in connection with the incident but has been released while investigations are ongoing.

Police are now looking for any witnesses to the incident, particularly the woman who pointed the man out to officers at Wimbledon station.

A spokesperson for British Transport Police said: “Officers investigating an incident that began on a District line Tube are appealing for witnesses and information.

“At just after 8pm on 20 May, a man attempted to rob a passenger on-board a District line service travelling between Notting Hill Gate and Wimbledon stations.

“The man was identified and as he was being arrested he assaulted one officer and racially abused another.

“A 52-year-old man has been arrested in connection and released under investigation pending further enquiries.

“Officers are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident, particularly a woman who pointed the man out to officers at Wimbledon station.
