A huge machete has been found during a stop and search in Greenwich.

Officers were on patrol on July 14 and were along Riverdale Road at around 4.30pm when they spotted two males heading along Saunders Road.

One of the police officers noticed what appeared to be a joint of cannabis tucked behind one of the men’s ears.

He was detained for a search and when the police searched his waistband, they found a large black handled machete inside a sheath.

The man was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and possession of cannabis.

He is to appear at Bromley Magistrates Court today.

A spokesperson for Greenwich Police said: “#Charged “#Remanded “1 Arrested for Possession of an offensive weapon and possession of cannabis.

“Great work once again by our Greenwich Integrated Enforcement Team

“On July 14 at around 4.30pm officers from the Integrated Enforcement Team were on mobile patrol along Riverdale Road, SE18 when their attention was drawn to two males walking along Saunders Road heading towards Purrett Road.

“Officers noticed that one had what appeared to be a joint of cannabis tucked behind his ear.

“Officers detained the suspect for a s.23 MDA.

“Officers took the joint of cannabis from behind the suspect's ear and continued with the search.

“During the search officers began to search the suspect's waistband and he found a large black handled machete inside a sheath tucked into the front of the suspect's trouser waistband.

“Officers arrested the suspect for possession of an offensive weapon and possession of cannabis.

“Charged and remanded to appear at Bromley Magistrates Court today.”
