Part of a maisonette above a shop has been damaged by a fire in Catford.

Firefighters were called to a maisonette alight on Rushey Green in Catford last night (July 5) at 9.22pm.

There has been no report of any injuries.

The fire is believed to be accidental and caused by smoking materials.

The fire was under control just before 10.30pm.

Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Lewisham, Forest Hill, Lee Green and Bromley fire stations were at the scene.

Firefighters have issued a smoking safer reminder that says: “We’d rather you didn’t smoke at all, but if you are a smoker, it’s absolutely vital you ensure your cigarette is completely out when you’ve finished smoking it.

“If you don’t, you risk causing a fire which could not only destroy your home, but also cost you your life.”

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Firefighters have issued a smoking safer reminder after a maisonette fire on Rushey Green in Catford.

“Part of a maisonette above a shop was damaged by the fire. There were no reports of any injuries.

“The Brigade's fire investigators believe the fire was accidental and caused by smoking materials.

“The Brigade's 999 Control Officers took 14 calls to the blaze.

“The Brigade was called at 2122 and the fire was under control by 2229. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Lewisham, Forest Hill, Lee Green and Bromley fire stations were at the scene.”
