London is renowned for its huge gap between poverty and wealth – and people in today’s world are facing a great squeeze on their finances.

Recent data from The Office of National Statistics reveals the levels of income deprivation across England, which is based on the proportion of people in an area who are out of work or on low earnings.

We’ve rounded up the levels of income deprivation across Bexley, Bromley, Dartford, Greenwich, Lewisham, and Southwark.

According to the ONS figures, Lewisham is the most income-deprived area in south east London – with 16.4 per cent of the population being income-deprived in 2019.

ONS figures also found that Bromley is the least income-deprived area in south east London - with 9.1 per cent of the population being income-deprived in 2019.

Below is a detailed look into levels of income-deprivation in each south east London borough:

Bexley

In Bexley, 10.6 per cent of the population was income-deprived in 2019.

Of the 316 local authorities in England – excluding the Isles of Scilly – Bexley is ranked 170th most income-deprived.

Of the 146 neighbourhoods in Bexley, 17 were among the 20 per cent most income deprived areas, and 42 neighbourhoods were in 20 per cent of the least income-deprived.

In the most deprived neighbourhood in Bexley, 27.7 per cent of people are estimated to be income deprived, and in the least deprived neighbourhood, 2 per cent of people are estimated to be income-deprived.

The gap between both figures is 25.7 per cent in Bexley, with the overall income deprivation score for Lewisham being 10.6 per cent.

Bromley

In Bromley, 9.1 per cent of the population was income-deprived in 2019.

Bromley is ranked 209th most income-deprived of the 316 local authorities in England - excluding the Isles of Scilly.

Of the 197 neighbourhoods in Bromley, 18 were among the 20 per cent most income-deprived in England and 70 neighbourhoods were in the 20 per cent least income-deprived.

In the most deprived neighbourhood, 30.1 per cent of people are estimated to be income deprived.

In the least deprived neighbourhood in Bromley, 1.0 per cent of people are estimated to be income deprived.

The gap between both figures is 29.1 per cent in Bromley, with the overall income deprivation score for Lewisham being 9.1 per cent Dartford In Dartford, 9.5 per cent of the population was income-deprived in 2019.

Dartford

Dartford is ranked 199th most income-deprived of the 316 local authorities in England - excluding the Isles of Scilly.

Of the 58 neighbourhoods in Dartford, five were among the 20 per cent most income-deprived and 15 neighbourhoods were in the 20 percent least income-deprived in England.

In the most deprived neighbourhood, 30.0 per cent of people are estimated to be income-deprived and in the least deprived neighbourhood in Dartford, 1.9 per cent of people are estimated to be income deprived.

The gap between both figures is 28.1 per cent in Dartford, with the overall income deprivation score for Dartford being 9.5 per cent.

Greenwich

In Greenwich, 15.9 per cent of the population was income-deprived in 2019.

Greenwich is ranked 57th most income-deprived of the 316 local authorities in England – excluding the Isles of Scilly.

Of the 151 neighbourhoods in Greenwich, 41 neighbourhoods were among the 20 per cent most income-deprived in England and six were in the 20 per cent least income-deprived.

In the most deprived neighbourhood in Greenwich, 32.8 per cent of people are estimated to be income-deprived, and in the least deprived neighbourhood in Greenwich, 1.6 per cent are estimated to be income-deprived.

The gap between both figures is 31.2 per cent in Greenwich, with the overall income deprivations score for Greenwich being 15.9 per cent.

Lewisham

In Lewisham, 16.4 per cent of the population was income-deprived in 2019.

Lewisham is ranked 51st most income-deprived of the 316 local authorities in England excluding the Isles of Scilly.

Of the 169 neighbourhoods in Lewisham, 55 were among the 20 per cent most income-deprived in England.

Of the 169 neighbourhoods in Lewisham, four were in the 20 per cent least income-deprived in England.

In the most deprived neighbourhood, 33.4 per cent of people are estimated to be income deprived, and in the least deprived neighbourhood in Lewisham, only 4 per cent of people are estimated to be income-deprived.

The gap between both figures is 24 per cent in Lewisham, with the overall income deprivation score for Lewisham being 16.4 per cent.

Southwark

In Southwark, 16.2 per cent of the population was income deprived in 2019.

Southwark is ranked 53rd most income-deprived of the 316 local authorities in England – excluding the Isles of Scilly.

Of the 166 neighbourhoods in Southwark, 56 were among the 20 per cent most income deprived in England – 14 neighbourhoods were in the 20 per cent least income-deprived in England.

In the most deprived neighbourhood, 38.2 per cent of people are estimated to be income deprived.

In the least deprived neighbourhood in Southwark, 0.8 per cent of people are estimated to be income-deprived.

The gap between the two figures is 37.4 per cent in Southwark, with the overall income deprivation percentage being 16.2 per cent.
