Armed police have flocked to a residential road in Orpington as a gun was found following a burglary.

Two men were reported to be acting suspiciously at around 5.20am in Crofton Road.

They had entered a home that was empty and being renovated.

Police went to the scene and detained an 18-year-old man.

After a search of the area and a vehicle, a gun was found.

Armed officers then attended to assist in the search.

The 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary and firearm offences.

He is currently detained at a south London police station.

A second suspect made off.

A crime scene is in place.

Police enquiries continue.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: "A man has been arrested for burglary and firearm offences.

"Officers were called at 05:22hrs on Thursday, 30 June to Crofton Road, Orpington.

"Two men were reported to be acting suspiciously at the scene and had entered a property that was empty and being renovated .

"Officers attended and an 18-year-old man was detained.

"The area and a vehicle were searched and, following the discovery of a firearm, the man was arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary and firearm offences.

"He is currently detained at a south London police station.

"A second suspect made off.

"As a result of the discovery of a firearm, armed officers attended to assist in the search.

"A crime scene is in place, enquiries continue."
