A Woolwich-based social worker is aiming to “spread love and unity” through his music.

James Appiah, also known as Domestic Beats, cares for adults with learning disabilities by day and produces music by night.

James is hopeful that his music will uplift people after a difficult few years and inspire others in the community to follow their dreams.

The 33-year-old artist told the News Shopper: “A lot of people lost loved ones, lost homes, and had a really hard time with employment in the pandemic.

“They then came out of that and were told that their utility bills are going to be going up on average 52%.

“Then you also have the war in Ukraine, so there’s a lot of negativity for people lately.

“It’s nice to be able to spread something positive.”

As well as his day job, James has been volunteering his time to help the local authorities assess those who are taking Ukrainian refugees into their homes.

He believes that music can be just as powerful a force for change as social work, especially for the younger generation.

James said: “In my house, music is about spreading love and unity amongst people.

“It doesn’t matter about mistakes you’ve made growing up - regardless of where you come from, if you work hard you can achieve things.

“If you told me 10 years ago that I would be where I am now, I never would’ve believed you.”

James’ music is inspired by his love of UK garage, grime and house music.

He hopes that one day he will be able to pursue his passion of making music full-time and use this as a vehicle for change within the community.

Domestic Beats’ new single, My Love, is out on June 27, 2022.
