A moped rider has died after crashing into a phone box in Woolwich.

The incident happened on Plumstead Road shortly before 10.30pm yesterday (June 1).

The rider, who was a 23-year-old man, was found injured by police. 

He was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews but died of his injuries.

His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

A spokesperson for Met Police said: “The incident occurred on Plumstead Road, SE18 at 10.30pm on Wednesday, 1 June.

“Officers attended and found a moped that had left the road and collided with a phone box.

“London Ambulance Service attended and rider of the moped - a 23-year-old man - was taken to hospital by LAS but died of his injuries.

“His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

“Detectives from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) are investigating.

“They are particularly keen to hear from any witnesses who saw the collision, or road users who may have captured the incident on dash cam footage.

“Any witnesses yet to speak with police are asked to call the SCIU at Catford Traffic Garage on 020 8285 1574 quoting reference 7665/1JUN.
