A man has been arrested after a car mounted a pavement, hit a woman and the driver attempted to escape in Woolwich.

A red Toyota mounted the pavement and hit a woman at around 2.50pm today in Beresford Street.

The driver attempted to make off from the scene but Woolwich town centre officers were passing and caught him.

He was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop and under Section 4 of the Public Order Act.

The woman was taken to hospital and her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.

Greenwich Police tweeted: "Suspect has mounted the pavement and hit a pedestrian but was swiftly arrested by Woolwich Town centre team.

"Victim taken to hospital injuries deemed not life threatening or changing.

"Arrested for S4 Public order and Failing to stop."
