The Batman was directed by Matt Reeves and was released on 4 March 2022. So far it has managed to gross over $500 million worldwide making it the most successful film of 2022 so far. Overall, the film was received well by fans and praised by critics who both were keen to see if this Batman could outperform Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight of Gotham.

The Batman, written by Matt Reeves and Peter Craig, starts off with the gruesome murder of the corrupt Mayor of Gotham at the hands of a mysterious and clearly disturbed sociopath who leaves a trail of clues at each of this crime scenes for the Batman to slowly learn the truth about Gotham. As Bruce slowly uncovers how corrupt the city really is he is faced with the task of freeing the city from corruption and bringing the Riddler to justice. Along the way he forms new relationships and discovers new enemies.

It was the role of Robert Pattison to take up the mantle of Batman and it is obvious that he was the right man for the job. Pattison does an amazing job at portraying Batman as someone obsessed with fighting crime, so much so that he doesn’t have time to run Wayne Enterprises or care about his own health. The intimidating presence and aggressive nature of this Batman is highlighted throughout the film. Playing Selina Kyle, also known as Catwoman, is Zoë Kravitz who in the film aids Batman in bringing justice to Gotham whilst also in an attempt to further their own agenda. In the film Jeffrey Wright takes the role of Commissioner Gordon. Whilst historically Jim Gordon has been portrayed as White it is clear that Wright, being a skilled and experienced actor, did a good job at portraying Gordon as someone focused on the task at hand and acting as a bridge for Batman and the Gotham City Police Department to work together on cases.

In conclusion, The Batman is an incredible watch and worth its three hour runtime. The dark atmosphere of the film and the colourful ray of interesting and developed characters makes sure you never get bored watching. Unlike the other Batman films, in this one Batman and the police seem to for the most part be working together on cases which provides an interesting new dynamic. Not only this but a sequel was teased near and at the end of the film with an exciting new villain in mind.
