TWENTY people have escaped a maisonette fire in Orpington.

Firefighters were called to the scene in Wotton Green yesterday (April 26) at around 4.35pm.

The Brigade tackled the fire at a block of maisonettes where a bin shed on the ground floor was damaged by the blaze.

A part of the ground, first, second and third floors of the building were also damaged.

A third-floor roof was destroyed by the fire, as well as a small part of a fourth-floor roof.

The first floor of an adjacent end-of-terraced house was also damaged by radiating heat.

Around 20 people left the building before the arrival of the Brigade.

There were no reports of any injuries.

The Brigade’s 999 control officers took 44 calls to the blaze.

The fire was under control by 6.19pm.

Fire crews from Bexley, Plumstead, Addington, Bromley, Orpington, and Sidcup fire stations attended the scene.

The cause of the fire has been recorded as undetermined.

A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade said: “Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters tackled a fire at a block of maisonettes on Wotton Green in Orpington.

“A bin shed on the ground floor was destroyed and part of the ground, first, second and third floors of the building were damaged by fire.

“A third-floor roof was also destroyed by the blaze, as well as a small part of a fourth-floor roof.

“The first floor of an adjacent end-of-terraced house was damaged by radiating heat.

“Around 20 people left the building before the Brigade arrived.

“There were no reports of any injuries.

“The Brigade’s 999 Control Officers took 44 calls to the blaze.

“The Brigade was called at 4.35pm and the fire was under control by 6.19pm.
