What does an ‘independent bookstore’ mean? Well these bookstores are independently owned meaning they aren’t part of a larger chain retailer and most consist of a single store; this means when you buy from an independent bookstore, you are supporting local businesses and communities instead of big corporations like Amazon.

So why is it important? These bookstores can help bring communities together through local events (book clubs, book signings etc) and giving a safe space for those who love reading- this gives people a sense of belonging and is a great source for social connection and networking over their love for books. Independent bookstores are also important as they help support new and local authors as they can feature less prominent works unlike big chain stores.

Beyond their role in communities, they also encourage diversity in literature as you can get book recommendations by well-read staff who can help expand your taste, not only are you getting to know the staff/community but you can also receive more personal recommendations unlike online with algorithms.

When I asked Derren Melville about his experience from buying from an independent bookstore he said “They have a more interpersonal feel which you don’t get from mainstream bookstores or online shopping. It’s a more friendly environment where staff have better knowledge, overall I prefer to visit independent bookstores.”

Next time you're shopping for books, hopefully you consider buying independent.
