A MAN has been rescued after a fire broke out at a care home in Raynes Park.

Firefighters were called to the scene in Blenheim Road today (April 21) shortly after 1.45am.

The Brigade tackled the fire on the ground floor of a three-storey building where a bedroom was destroyed by the blaze.

Fire crews wearing breathing apparatus carried out multiple evacuations of the building.

A man, who suffered from burns, was rescued from the room where the fire started.

A further six other residents were moved to safety from the building.

Residents were assessed on the scene by London Ambulance Service.

The fire was over shortly after 4.15am.

Fire crews from New Malden, Wimbledon, Sutton, Mitcham and Tooting fire stations were in attendance.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade and the Met Police.

Sub Officer Dan Ascough was at the scene, he said: “On arrival crews worked really hard to ensure the safety of the residents and made sure they were quickly brought to a place of safety.

“Fortunately, the fire was contained to one room with smoke damage to surrounding rooms.

“Firefighters rescued one man from the room where the fire originated who was suffering from burns.”

A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade said: “Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to a fire at a care home on Blenheim Road in Raynes Park.

“One bedroom on the ground of the three storey building was completely destroyed by fire.

“Fire crews wearing breathing apparatus carried out multiple evacuations of the building with around six people.

“A further six other residents were moved to safety within the building.

“Residents were assessed on scene by London Ambulance Service.

“The Brigade was called at 1.36am and the incident was over by 4.16am.

“Fire crews from New Malden, Wimbledon, Sutton, Mitcham and Tooting fire stations were in attendance.

“The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade and the Met Police.”
