In 1699, Guru Gobind Singh Ji asked the crowd who was prepared to give their life and one person stood up, followed by four more men. They were known as the ‘Panj Pyare’ which means the five beloved. They were given Amrit, leading them to being baptised into the Khalsa. When being baptised into the Khalsa, a Sikh will then have the 5 K’s which consists of: kesh (uncut hair), kanga (a wooden comb), kara (rounded bangle made of pure steel or iron), kachera (cotton underwear) and a kirpan (sword). As a result of this, Sikhs celebrate this day around the world by going to the gurdwara, doing seva (selfless service), reciting paat and also taking part in a nagar kirtan.
