For more than four years a Wetherspoons pub in Crystal Palace has sat empty, but the chain said there is no update on when work on a huge redevelopment will start.

The Grape and Grain at the top of Anerley Hill on the border of Croydon and Bromley closed its doors in November 2017.

Plans to extend the building were approved by Bromley Council in May 2019.

The plans includes building two storeys on top of the existing pub as well as a three-storey addition on the Church Road side of the building and roof garden.

When the pandemic hit, the company said all development projects were on hold and now says there is still no update on the project.

The permission granted by the council is valid for three years meaning it will expire in two months.

The pub sits on the corner of ‘the triangle’ the area’s main shopping district and over the road from the top entrance of Crystal Palace Park.

Angela Wilkins, outgoing Bromley councillor for Crystal Palace, said: “I’m really disappointed that Wetherspoon hasn’t done anything with this, their planning permission is about to run out.

"It leaves us with an absolute eyesore at the entrance to the triangle and park.

“This is South London’s premier park and there is an independent, buzzing community in the triangle. Having this site left as it is, with all the potential to enhance the area, at the moment it is just bringing the area down.”

The pub chain closed The Postal Order in the Crystal Palace triangle last March.

At the time a spokesperson said the company had decided not to renew the lease on the Westow Street pub.

This year, the chain has called time on two more of its pubs in Croydon.

The Skylark in South End closed for good on Sunday (March 27) while The Milan Bar in the town centre closed suddenly on February 14.
