I recently had the honor to interview two people of colour students who are Simran Khatri and Vianna Mafokosho about a series of questions on racism.

what’s your race?

Simran: Asian

Vianna: Black

what’s your ethnicity?

Simran: Central Asian

Vianna: African/British

Have you ever experienced racism?

Simran: Yes I have experienced racism multiple times throughout my life, so much so I forgot that racism is technically illegal

Vianna: Yes, many times, also from a young age

Have you ever felt discriminated against because of your race?

Simran: I have felt discriminated against because of my race and background. It really depends on what gets said to you, whether or not the intentions were to harm or if they were just being ignorant.

Vianna: yes, I feel like I need to work ten times harder to seem just as good as everyone else

Do you ever feel isolated from the school community because of your racial identity?

Simran: At times I do feel ostracised from my school community. That was more predominant in primary school as I went to school in which I was the only brown girl in my entire year group- therefore I didn’t get the chance to associate myself with people of my own cultural background and that did make me feel left out. In secondary school, I have taken more initiative when it comes to raising awareness about discrimination and current world affairs and I am trying my best to make it a part of the school community and not just a label on the website

Vianna: not really, in primary I did as my school was predominantly white but now I’m friends with many black peoples which feels nice to have people to relate too

Have you ever been associated with stereotypes?

Simran: I have been associated with stereotypes.

Vianna: Yes, loud, and outspoken

As you can all see these two students have experienced racism quite a lot, that's appalling to see, let's not repeat history, we are the future that can change so much, our future and others rely on our change in order to make a better world, let's work together and make a difference to our behavior, and become more accepting, open-minded and respectful.
