Blackwall Tunnel is operating as usual this morning after a power failure which was caused by a fire at an electrical substation in Poplar.
The Brigade was called to the scene of the blaze in Castor Lane yesterday (March 29) shortly before 12.50pm.
London Fire Brigade (LFB) announced on Twitter at 2.45pm that thousands of commuters will be affected by the closure of the tunnel and disruption will continue into rush hour.
LFB then tweeted shortly before 7pm that the tunnel reopened as 4,500 customers were affected by the power failure.
Firefighters tackled the fire on the ground floor of a two-storey electrical substation which was damaged by the blaze.
Around 100 people were evacuated from an adjacent depot and 1500 students were evacuated from a college at the rear of the substation, according to LFB.
The Rotherhithe Tunnel also closed and DLR services were suspended following the blaze but both have now reopened.
The fire was under control shortly after 6pm.
Fire crews from Shoreditch, Bethnal Green, Shadwell and Plaistow fire stations were at the scene in Poplar.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
