& Juliet is a musical based on Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet however its twist is that Juliet stays alive instead of dying alongside her star-crossed lover Romeo. This musical encompasses Juliet's journey of self-discovery showing the highs and lows of a women living independently in society and it also shows Anne Hathaway (Shakespeare's wife) taking control of the storyline. The musical highlights important topics such as gender identity being a member of the LGBTQ+ community and social acceptance. The musical uses modern pop songs to portray the storyline performed by a live band, the story is engaging, and the dancing and acting is captivating. Not only is & Juliet a upbeat musical, it is inspiring and empowering for the audience as they see Juliet take control of her own destiny instead of allowing the people in her life to choose for her. I thoroughly enjoyed the musical and would recommend it to everyone as it opens up many important conversations and ignites hope in the audience. After the difficult few years in the pandemic this musical provides an uplifting and insightful approach to issues faced within society whilst using songs the audience will know so they can sing along and interact.
