While the war between Russia and Ukraine is still happening, many Britons are trying to help by offering spare rooms in their houses to Ukrainian refugees.

Many people in Britain want to help the people in Ukraine because they see that they have suddenly been made homeless and lost all their possessions through no fault of their own.

The local church in Orpington, St. Johns church has been active in collecting items such as clothes and toiletries.

Farringtons school has also had active participation from many students, parents and staff for donations to be sent to Ukraine.

Ukrainians have been put in a position where their lives and the lives of their loved ones have been put in danger. They have been forced to leave their homes and sometimes family members because it is too dangerous to stay in that location.

They have been forced to risk their lives to travel long distances in dangerous conditions and in some cases to other countries with nothing much more than the clothes they are wearing.

British people want to help because they feel empathy for Ukrainians - they are similar people - Europeans with similar backgrounds, beliefs and desires as the British people - it is not like a war in a remote part of the world that British people find difficult to relate to.

British people are finding it difficult to help, the government are slow to allow refugees from Ukraine into Britain and the process is still difficult even though there are many people offering to accommodate refugees in their own homes - the process of linking a refugee family with a donor family is not joined up - there is a hole in the process despite great efforts by the donors.

Co-ordination is needed at the Government level to allow the process to operate more efficiently. Everybody is hoping that the situation will improve in Ukraine and the refugees will be able to go back to their home towns and Cities and the escape to other countries will only be temporary. Even in this best-case scenario, in many cases; homes, towns and cities will need to be rebuilt including large infrastructures such as power stations and bridges. Ukraine will need the support of the rest of the Western World for many years to come.
