A man has been taken to hospital after being rescued from the River Thames at Erith pier.

Police were called to the scene in Erith Deep Wharf at around 11.55am today.

A member of the public had reported that a man had entered the water there.

The man, aged in his mid-50s, was taken from the water by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

He was taken to hospital in an ambulance.

His condition is not thought to be life threatening.

London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service also attended the scene.

Pictures show London's Air Ambulance landing at the scene.

A RNLI spokesperson said: "I can confirm that the lifeboat attended Erith to reports of person in the water.

"The lifeboat crew rescued the person and handed them over into the care of the London Ambulance Service."

A London Air Ambulance spokesperson said: “Our advanced trauma team was dispatched via aircraft by London Ambulance Service at 13.15 today to reports of a person in the water near Erith Causeway. 

"After treatment on scene the patient was transferred by road to a major trauma hospital accompanied by London’s Air Ambulance.”

A Met Police spokesperson said: "Officers were called at 11:53hrs on Tuesday, 22 March to Erith Deep Wharf.

"A member of the public had reported that a man had entered the water at the location.

"Police, LFB, LAS and RNLI attended the scene.

"The man, who is aged in his mid-50s, was taken from the water by RNLI.

"He has been taken to hospital, his condition is not thought life threatening."
