For many people reaching the ages of 16-17, starting college and thinking about their futures, jobs are a daunting but necessary thought. Recently, I applied and started my first job as a bar and restaurant host. As the prospect of University vs. Gap Year looms, the common denominator was money. Money is what makes the world go around, and is the one-way ticket from college to the real world. Whilst I took this new step, I spoke to people who have worked in business about their experiences with their first jobs and any tips they have for stepping onto the career ladder.

I first spoke to Ashlyn Mukiibi, she is training in Animal Care and has worked at a local kennel for nearly a year. She started working when she felt it was the right time for her, gaining a new sense of independence. When speaking with me, she said, “The best part of working, and something I wasn’t expecting, was the great people you work with. They are extremely supportive and kind, it’s like having a second family.” She works for a kennel, learning about animals and working with people every day. It’s a great start for her career and is ideal work experience that will give her a head start when she applies for even bigger jobs. She said, “You’re meeting people constantly, you develop people skills quickly. You also learn about people, they’re not always nice but it’s part of your job to make sure they are happy with your service.” Finally, Ashlyn said your first job “makes you feel more grown up. You’re given big responsibilities. You’re working alongside trained adults who have years on you, but you are both being trusted. I felt like I wasn’t a kid anymore, and that was great.”

I also spoke to Ashley Skinner, someone who has been developing her C.V for years and has always had a love for business and careers. She explained to me that, “Your first job is a crucial part of your journey into the world. When you are young, you can venture into any industry, there are no barriers for you. You are learning skills that will stay with you forever, moulding you into the person you will become.” I asked her some of the best parts of having your first job and the biggest lessons she learnt when starting. “Working and having a job allows you to value money like you never did before. When I got my first pay cheque, I knew how many hours and effort had gone into that money. It completely changes your perspective on the world.” We also spoke about the application process as for many, this is the main obstacle in their path. Ashley said her best tips are; “Prepare for rejection. It happens to everyone and is a part of life. You just have to apply to everywhere you think could be good for you and your path, and also push yourself.” She concluded our talk by explaining that: Working is scary but is something we all have to do. You are getting great work and life experience.”

Starting your first job is a frightening prospect, especially as it’s usually something you embark on your own. However, it is something that will stay with you for your whole life, leading you into your future career. It develops your people skills, allows you to challenge yourself and learn about the world. Everyone must start somewhere and listening to Ashlyn and Ashley and their passion for their jobs, has given me a new excitement for my own. I hope their tips have motivated others to take this fun and exciting step towards your future.
