A pothole ridden road, that was brought to Essex County Council’s attention after Sir Rod Stewart recorded himself picking up a shovel to repair the road, will be resurfaced by the council soon.

The 77-year-old veteran rock star shared videos to his Instagram of him and a team shovelling gravel from a lorry into a large number of potholes on a country lane near Harlow – claiming “no-one can be bothered to do it”.

Sir Rod explained he decided to take matters into his own hands after an ambulance had a burst tyre and other cars were “bashing their cars up” due to the damaged road.

He also added that his Ferrari could not drive down the road.

In a video shared to Instagram, he was seen dressed in a tracksuit and a high-vis vest while singing and shovelling gravel, and said: "I’m repairing the street where I live as no-one can be bothered to do it."

In another clip, he demonstrated the extent of the damage and added: "This is the state of the road near where I live in Harlow and it’s been like this for ages.”

Leader of Essex County Council, Kevin Bentley, has since said that the council will repair the road after admitting it “wasn’t the condition it should be in”.

The potholes will be temporarily filled in April and the road will then be resurfaced in July.

Mr Bentley said: "We must get to our roads as quickly as we can within the financial constraints what we have."

Lee Scott, who is responsible for highways maintenance at the council, previously warned others to not “take matters into their own hands” adding that people should instead report it for the council to fix.
