For Ukrainians all around the world, the last two weeks have been undeniably horrifying, especially for those actively fleeing Ukraine. The bravery and strength that the people of Ukraine have shown in the face of Putin’s barbaric invasion has been remarkable. Although here in London it may seem difficult to know what you can do to help, there are plenty of things you can do to stand with Ukraine and support the victims of this invasion.

The most effective way of helping those trapped in Ukraine and impacted by the war is to make a financial donation. Unfortunately, scammers take advantage of awful situations like this, and set up fake donation pages, claiming that the money goes to Ukrainians in need when it in fact goes straight into their pockets. This means it is very important to check where your money is going and make sure you donate to reputable charities. Legitimate charities verified by the Mayor and the London Assembly include the Disaster Emergency Committee, British Ukrainian Aid, Save The Children, and many more. These charities provide life-saving aid, such as medical care, food supplies and winter kits of clothing.

If you are unable to make a financial donation, another option is to donate clothing or other essential items to be taken into Ukraine and neighbouring countries for victims. Many groups have set up donation points across London for members of the public to drop off supplies. Supplies include clothing, sanitary products, power banks and bedding. All of these items go directly to Ukrainians impacted by the war who have fled to neighbouring countries like Poland, and those who are still living in Ukraine. Before donating it is vital to check what supplies specific donation points are collecting. Locations accepting donations include the Polish White Eagle Club, located in Balham, which reopens for donations tomorrow on the 9th of March. The supplies they are prioritising include baby supplies, first aid kits and batteries although a full list is available on their Facebook page, where they post opening times for donations and up to date information about supplies that they need. The North London Collection Centre is also accepting donations, prioritising supplies like toothbrushes, sleeping bags and canned food. Many other cafes, community centres and restaurants are accepting donations all over London so to find your nearest collection point ask around in person and on social media, particularly Facebook as many local groups include information about where is taking donations.

Alternatively, people are also encouraged to write to their local MP, calling on the government to offer assistance to fleeing Ukrainians, particularly in terms of visa rules and getting into the UK.
Even though it may seem as if the situation in Ukraine is out of our hands, Londoners can still do their bit to help the people of Ukraine during these difficult times.
