Padma Shri Sindhutai Sapkal was the guide of affection, sympathy and trust. Sapkal, who was popularly referred to as "Mai", ran an orphanage where she adopted more than 1500 orphans. She was awarded the Padma Shri for her spectacular contribution to society. Apart from that, there are around 750 honours in her name. She would give the honour cash to the four foundations she has laid out to look after orphans. She always said, “I am there for all those who have no one”
Sindhutai Sapkal never had a simple life. Returning to her initial days, she was brought into the world in an unfortunate family in Wardha, Maharashtra. Being an undesirable child, she was nicknamed ‘Chindhi’ (a torn piece of cloth).Being cruelly treated like an unwanted child in the family caused her to understand that each kid should be treated with dignity.

At 12 years old, she was married to a 32 year old man, Shrihari Sapkal, and had three children. Her husband abandoned her when she was pregnant for the fourth time at 20 years old. She gave birth to a baby girl in a cow shed with absolutely no support from her family. Having a desire for singing, she would sing on the streets and begged in trains to get by. She continued to fight for herself and her daughter's existence and made train stations, cowsheds and cemeteries her home. This was the start of Sindhutai's central goal to focus on orphans. She became "Mai" (mother) for them. Sindhutai would focus on them till they grew up to take up jobs, get married and have a comfortable life.
All through her life, Sindhutai battled against challenges just to bring up those orphans. She would travel a great deal, meeting individuals from different layers of society with a plan to raise awareness for her shelter homes. She would take the opportunity to deliver speeches where she would talk about her biography so that individuals would donate for her honourable goal.
A Marathi movie, I am Sindhutai Sapkal, directed by Anant Mahadevan and delivered in 2010, is a great awakening by the genuine story of Sindhutai Sapkal. The film was nominated for world premiere at the 54th London Film Festival.
This great daughter of India passed away on 4th January 2022. Her life is a source of inspiration for millions and she will be remembered for her noble service to society. We should all aim to be like her in our own humble ways, as small actions can lead to big changes :)
