A policy has been introduced by Bromley Council to aim for zero emissions in the area by 2027.

The target, which was outlined yesterday (February 28) during a council meeting, aims to follow London's Net Zero carbon emissions 2029 objective.

Council emissions were reduced last year by 39.5 per cent as a result of cutting down on water and paper usage, waste, and business travel.

The recent emissions figures were also impacted by COVID and related changes to Council operations.

Bromley Council also aims to support residents, partners, and businesses in reducing their carbon footprint.

Councillor William Harmer, Chairman of Environment Committee said: “We are taking action which has environmental benefits, and which is also carefully costed.

“We are planting more trees and soon, the whole of our borough will have energy efficient LED lighting, which will also bring financial savings.

“We must and are focussing on this whole area and will deliver this highly demanding net zero target for residents now and for our children.”

A £1.35 million street tree planting project and LED street lighting upgrades have also been installed to capture carbon dioxide emissions.

This has prevented 600 tonnes of emissions each year and saved £380,000 in reducing energy and maintenance costs, according to Bromley Council.

The facilities for electric vehicle charging are also being installed in Bromley with a target to improve conditions for pedestrians and cyclists.
