A man has been arrested after a huge knife was found hidden in a bush in Lewisham.

Officers attended the scene of a fight at a pub in Lewisham and soon after, were called to reports of a man armed with a knife nearby.

A member of the public then told police that they had seen a man hide a knife in a bush.

An officer then stopped a man who was the alleged offender.

A knife was found hidden in a bush under leaves, and officers say a small quantity of cannabis was found in a man’s possession when searched.

A man was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and possession of cannabis.

Officers say the suspect made a “no comment” interview.

He was then released pending further investigation on the knife and CCTV enquiries.

A spokesperson from Lewisham Police said: “Police Sergeant Cooley from the Integrated Enforcement Team was staffing up Emergency Response team at Lewisham.

“A call came out of a fight at a pub and several units were deployed.

“PS Cooley also deployed to the fight.

“On arrival, another call came out to a male who had been armed with a huge knife close by.

“The informant went on to say that the male had hidden it in the bush.

“PS Cooley stopped the male who the informant confirmed was the offender.

“After a short struggle he was handcuffed before he was joined by PC Cornhill and PC Cover from the team who searched the male.

“A small quantity of cannabis was recovered.

“PS Cooley spoke to the informant, and she took him to the location where the knife was hidden in a bush under some leaves.

“PS Cornhill duly arrested the male for possession of an offensive weapon and possession of cannabis.

“Another dangerous weapon taken off the streets as a result of stop and search.

“The offender was interviewed and made a no comment interview.

“He was RUI’D for forensics on the knife and CCTV enquiries.”
