Especially after the last few years we have had, reading has become a lifeline for many. People of all ages from young children to the elderly have enjoyed reading a lot more books and genres over the last couple of years. Reading opens up new worlds and imaginations for everyone, allowing people to escape reality and dive into a completely different story whether that be a thriller, comedy or a romance and escape the stress of everyday life especially in a pandemic.

Studies have also shown reading also significantly improves mental health and overall wellbeing and happiness. Over the last few years isolation and loneliness have been a huge issue worldwide and reading has kept thousands of people occupied, allowing them to escape into a new world providing them with escapism from everyday life especially during a pandemic as well as fun, thrill and entertainment. Reading just a couple of pages per day has been proven to improve mental health, wellbeing and happiness among all ages particularly the elderly and teenagers. Reading has also become more thoroughly enjoyed by more as more people have been reading more over lockdown and isolations and have consequently been experiencing a large variety of new books and genres which they otherwise may never have thought to read.

Reading has also always been encouraged by schools particularly over home schooling periods as it helps improve literacy rates, vocabulary and overall English skills especially among young children who have not experienced the same level of teaching in vital early year’s development. As well as this, teenagers and children of all ages have benefited from reading providing escapism and diversion away from stressful periods of times while also widening their vocabulary and literacy skills.  Consequently reading the last couple of years has not only provided much needed escapism and enjoyment but also improved many young people’s English and vocabulary skills, improving their education and literacy rates in the long term especially vital in an often limited home schooling environment. Reading has consequently been vital over the last few years providing much needed enjoyment, escapism and wellbeing benefits for everyone helping to reduce loneliness and boredom as well as education benefits particularly for young people. It has also opened people’s eyes to a new hobby or new genres or styles of books which they may have otherwise not explored.
