In mind of the issues surrounding the evolving world of fashion, a growing number of the UK population have successfully managed to work together to make positive changes regarding the general issue of sustainability.
According to BBC Future, fashion accounts for around 10% of greenhouse gas emissions from human activity, leading to increased pollution on our planet, including high levels of damage in the ocean and on animals. The fashion industry is stated to be the second most polluting industry in the world, after oil.
As a fashion enthusiast, I have worked in many ways to lower the amount of environmental damage caused towards the planet. In mind of the fashion industry, I have taken my time to research elements such as the impact of global high street brands (otherwise known as ‘fast fashion’ brands) and how brand sustainability can be further achieved.
If you are looking to buy from a particular brand and you may not own enough clothes for a certain occasion (such as work wear or a party outfit), make sure to research the brand first, such as looking into their economic and environmental values and reading reviews from past customers.
Particularly if you don’t intend to buy from a particular clothing brand (in-store or online) or if you are not looking to spend much money, make sure to visit some of your local charity and vintage shops. Many of the clothing items continue to last in well-kept conditions for customers of any age, and should ideally last for as long as possible.
Every once in a while (I would personally suggest every few months), make sure to look through every single item in your wardrobe, or through as many as possible. If there are any items that you have not worn in a long time or you are not planning to wear, choose a more sustainable option through recycling your clothes, giving them away to charity, or passing them down to a younger relative in your family.
If you are also interested in the world surrounding fashion and you feel pressured into only wearing the same piece a few times, keeping the same items can last longer than you may think. In mind of becoming creative with your wardrobe, up to hundreds or even thousands of clothing combinations could be created, and you could really surprise yourself with the potential results of your creations.
Base your wardrobe not around trends, because all the current ones could vanish by tomorrow. Rather, you have the power to do so around the potential timelessness of your personal style.
