Greenwich is planning a huge council tax rise and parking fee hike in a new budget.

A council tax jump of just short of three per cent and a 12.5 per cent increase in some parking fees could be coming if voted through later this month.

If approved, the changes will come into force by April.

The 2022/23 budget proposed would see the three per cent go towards council tax (1.99 per cent) and the adult social care precept (one per cent).

A three per cent rise is the highest amount council tax can be raised without a referendum.

The combination of the council tax rise means those in Band D properties face paying £1,314 to the borough over the next financial year.

Combined with the Greater London Authority precept of £395.59, the overall cost to people in Band D households would be £1,710.

Parking fees around the Cutty Sark – the popular tourist attraction celebrating the historic sailing ship – are also set to go up by 12.5 per cent.

Hourly fees will go from £3.20 to £3.60 if signed off by the council.

The Burney Street car park, Park Row car park and parking in parts of Greenwich’s town centre would see identical changes to their fees.

The cabinet will decide on the changes at a council meeting next week.

The proposed changes come as the country prepares for rises in national insurance in April.

There are also worries about the cost of living due to rising inflation and food prices going up in supermarkets.

The council’s consultation with 135 residents found less than half of respondents were in favour of a rise in the borough element of council tax.

81 per cent wanted to see frontline services protected and 69 per cent wanted to prioritise spending on social care.

60 per cent also wanted the council to prioritise spending on reducing poverty and supporting residents struggling with the cost of living crisis.

A Greenwich council spokesperson said it did not wish to comment before any decisions were made.
