In the first week of February 2022, girls from years 7 to 13 at Croydon High school did a fantastic performance of Calamity Jane. The show was packed with songs sung by 'Calamity' and 'Bill' and the ensemble backed them up brilliantly.

Calamity, played by Beth Williams, and Bill, played by Fallon Vargerson, were stars of the stage and brought laughter to the audience throughout the play.

They've been working all year to perfect it, and their hard work has clearly paid off. The final week of rehearsals for cast, band and crew were jam packed and Mrs. Webb, Miss. Grimshaw and Mr. Suranyi worked so hard to make this show work.

When asked how she thought the play had turned out, Mrs. Webb, head of the Drama department at Croydon High, responded “Calamity Jane is certainly the strongest production we have performed at Croydon High in my time at the school. The overall quality of acting, singing, musicianship and stage and technical work was outstanding. The feedback from the audience was fantastic – it was wonderful to be back in front of a live audience!”

When asked what her top three highlights were, Mrs. Webb replied “Beth and Fallon in I Can Do Without You, Beth climbing out of her ballgown and throwing her petticoat, shoes and gloves in rage!! Sienna (Francis’) Hive full of Honey and Maddie’s 'I’ve got her! I’ve got Adelaide Adams'."

When asked What she finds the best part of putting together one of these shows, Mrs. Webb said “I love every part of them! But what makes me most proud is how every company (cast, crew, band, tech, staff) become their own community – how we get to know each other, how friendships across year groups are formed, how we have our own “in jokes” etc.”

Congratulations to all the girls involved in this spectacular performance, it was amazing.
