Police are trying to find a person following the attempted theft of a moped in Potters Bar.

The incident happened in Summit Road on Monday, January 17 between 2pm and 2.20pm.

Hertfordshire Constabulary says a thief interfered with the moped, vigorously shaking the handlebar and stamping on the stand in an attempt to get the vehicle to move.

When this was unsuccessful, they made off.

Police believe the person pictured might be able to help their enquiries.

PC C-Jay Callaghan, who is investigating, said: “Unfortunately, since the offender’s interference with the moped, the engine no longer starts which has caused huge disappointment for the victim.

“We believe the person pictured was in the area at the time and could have vital information about what happened. We’re keen to speak to them so if you recognise them please get in touch. We appreciate that their face is covered but hopefully someone recognises the clothing or the bike.

"If you recognise them, or have information yourself, please call the non-emergency number 101 or email me at c-jay.callaghan@herts.police.uk quoting crime reference 41/4424/22.

“I’d also like to take this opportunity to remind residents of tips to protect their mopeds or motorbikes. It’s worth considering fitting a Thatcham-rated 1 or 2 alarm system with tracking, immobilisation, anti-grab and movement sensors. Not only will it put off thieves, but it could also reduce your insurance premiums. We also recommend a lock, chain and cover. For more tips, visit herts.police.uk/cp/crime-prevention.”
