A man was fined more than £800 for attending a Boxing Day gathering in Lewisham while the country was in strict lockdown.

Mark Eke, 43, of Vincent Road, Woolwich, “participated in a gathering” at a private address on Algernon Road, where two or more people were in attendance “without reasonable excuse”, on December 26, 2020.

London was in Tier 4 at the time, which saw people only allowed to leave home for essential purposes, such as to buy food and medical supplies, or for daily exercise.

Mr Eke was found guilty at Westminster Magistrates' Court on January 19, 2022.

He was fined at initial £660 for the offence, an extra £66 to fund victim services and £100 for the costs of the Crown Prosecution Service.

Mr Eke was given until February 16 to pay the total amount of £826.
