Buses are now 90 minutes late arriving at Southgate, the whole route is severely disrupted, you are strongly advised to seek an alternative route, especially if you are heading towards Chase Farm Hospital.
Queues have continued throughout the day and into this evening.
Thames Water is responsible for fixing the repair and is hopeful it will be complete tonight.
A Thames Water spokesperson said: "We’re sorry for any disruption caused while we urgently repair a burst water main. We anticipate the repair will be completed tonight and we have four-way traffic lights and a pedestrian crossing in place while we fix the pipe."
However, the water supplier has warned it may take longer to reinstate the road surface that will allow the temporary traffic lights to be removed so the lights could we still be there tomorrow and potentially longer.
Enfield Council tweeted today: "A water leak at the junction of Ashfield Parade & High Street is causing severe congestion in Southgate.
"Thames Water are on the scene and fixing the leak, this is expected to be done by tomorrow but temporary traffic controls are in place while work continues.
"Traffic controls are in place but motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible."
