17 year old, Precious Fasakin is a volunteer within the NHS at Princess Royal University Hospital in Bromley. Her ambitions for the future have given her the drive to help and care for inpatients in the gastronomy department for four hours a week. This role requires responsibility and maturity when speaking to and assisting the people in her care. Her duties include entertaining and providing company whilst also supporting the nurses on the ward with their tasks. Precious shares how “the nurses are respectful and reliable and teach me the realities of hospital life.” This once in a life time experience comes with many positive aspects such as a sense of honour and satisfaction from working with the Uk’s health service and skilled professionals.

Precious holds high hopes for her future in the world of medicine and believes the “practice I am getting now will prepare me for all aspects of life not only a career in health care.” She mentions how her current role pushes her capabilities and extends her emotional capacity by building empathy and patience. The wide variety of people she cares for all have different outlooks on their time spent in hospital. Some “struggle to open up” whilst others “love to chat” with the nurses and staff. This is an example of the challenges Precious experiences throughout the day but it assists in building her perseverance and people skills, crucial for a life within medicine.

Precious attends a local sixth form in Bromley where she studies Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology assisting with her journey into the medical world. She mentions how “the job can be exhausting paired with school but its all good preparation for the future.” The main motivation for this young adult is to assist in the health of people and the “feel-good” feeling that accompanies it.Hoping to study medicine, this chance gives her a helping hand into her desired profession and assists her with “maintaining focus” on her end goal.
