A charity has urged people to "keep the magic alive" this Christmas for hospital patients by donating money for presents.

Raise has launched its 'Raise a Smile this Christmas' appeal to help get gifts for anyone spending the festive season alone at Watford General and St Albans City hospitals.

Charity director Sofia Sheikh said: “We have never been in more need of kindness and good will.

"Everyone wants to be home for the celebrations but for some poorly patients this simply isn’t possible.

"Staff work hard to make December a happy time, but to make it extra special we are asking local businesses and our local communities to support our ‘Raise a Smile this Christmas’ appeal by making a donation."

Watford Observer:

She continued: "Presents are hugely important – it’s about keeping the magic alive.

"With donations from kind well-wishers, the charity team can buy a selection of gifts so patients know someone is thinking of them."

In previous years people have brought presents into the hospitals but Covid control measures have made that more difficult.

Instead the charity is asking for donations so it can buy gifts for patients.

Ms Sheikh added: “Please be assured that we will spend all donations wisely and bring joy to patients in hospital this festive season.

"We know times are difficult for many at the moment, but any donations the public can make will make such a difference."
