The simple joy and value of letter writing has been all but forgotten completely in a post-Covid world. In the midst of a life-threatening pandemic, it seems almost a privilege to be able to be concerned with things of seemingly such little importance. However, this group of young people did not underestimate the benefits of communicating through the written word. They pioneered a completely student-led initiative as a part of a community project that would help combat loneliness in the elderly communities of Bexley and Greenwich, at Marlborough Court Care Home.

They visited (and intend to keep visiting regularly) the care home to have some conversation with the residents there and make sure they knew that they were not forgotten and that they were valued within our community. Not only this, but they took it a step further and set up a continuous penpal initiative where anyone can get involved and write a letter for the residents to read and share. While small, they soon realised these gestures can mean so much. Keeping the elderly at the heart of their community was the goal and so they also collected some life advice to share with those who contributed to the penpal scheme. These included things like "Travel as much as possible", "wear what you like" and "keep your mind and body healthy".

Entering a world of stricter Covid restrictions once again, these small contributions will mean more than ever to the residents at Marlborough court, and care homes across the UK.
