Voters in the Old Bexley and Sidcup constituency will select their new MP tomorrow (December 2), following the tragic death of James Brokenshire.

Former local government secretary Mr Brokenshire won the seat with a majority of almost 19,000 at the 2019 general election.

With the constituency held by the Conservatives since its inception in 1983, councillor Louie French will seek to retain the seat for the party.

News Shopper has given the main candidates the opportunity to speak directly to readers ahead of polling day.

Louie French - Conservative

As someone who has lived in this constituency my entire life, I know and care for our local area.

And I have a track record of getting things done here: as a local councillor, I delivered a first in the country scheme that gave help to local pubs, social and sports clubs through the pandemic.

I also helped deliver the new cinema currently being built in Sidcup.

And I will build on the things that the Conservatives have delivered here nationally too, such as the £30 million investment into Queen Mary’s hospital, delivering new cancer and kidney centres.

I will fight for Bexley to get our fair share of the extra police officers the government is recruiting and to stop Sadiq Khan diverting them to Greenwich and Lewisham.

I will also fight tooth and nail against Sadiq Khan’s outer London tax on drivers here. The Labour candidate here has refused to put up any opposition to Khan’s plans and would simply wave through this unfair tax that would clobber drivers here.

And I want to see big improvements in getting face-to-face GP appointments again and would work with the government to secure funding announced in the Budget to clear Covid backlogs.

The Labour candidate here wouldn’t work with a Conservative government to secure these things and won’t stand up to a Labour Mayor of London who treats outer London with contempt.

So on Thursday, for a strong local champion who can get things done for our area, I urge News Shopper readers to come out and vote for me.
