Last year Christmas was cancelled for some after a ‘U-turn’ from the government. Which decided that all those living in Tier 4 areas (London and the South – East) would have to stay at home for Christmas. This decision was sensible because there was a new variant on the rise, the R number was above 1 and 27,000 cases had been reported in 24 hours.

What we’re all waiting to see this year is if there will be a repeat of last year. Unfortunately, the odds are not in our favour with the new Omicron variant bringing back mask wearing in schools and on public transport.

Although 68.9 percent of the British population are vaccinated and booster jabs are available it seems that this is not enough to keep up with the mutations of COVID-19. Concern over the Omicron variant has led 56 countries to issue travel restrictions.

Sadly, we do not know all the much about the Omicron variant at the moment but there is no evidence – at the minute – to suggest that the symptoms of it are worse than any of the other COVID-19 variants. Until we are able to learn more about the new variant and are closer to the 25th of December in our calendars all we can do is continue to be vigilant. By wearing masks, social distancing and testing.

At present, nothing about Christmas can be set in stone but there is hope that Christmas 2021 will go ahead as usual so that people will be able to celebrate and enjoy festivities with their friends and family.
