On the 21st of October, the Sutton Borough Cross Country event returned to the SGS Northey Avenue Walch Memorial Sports Grounds, with over 1000 competitors vying for top spot in their category.

In the morning, the secondary schools had their runs with varying lap distances ranging from 1 mile for Year Sevens to 3 miles for Sixth Form. The day started at 10:30 with the final secondary school event began at 12:05. The proceedings resumed at 14:05 for the primary school runners, all of whom ran 1 mile. Their day ended at 16:00 with trophies awarded for age-group and school winners.

In what was a sunny and bright day, one thrilled participant described her experience as “fun and exciting, with lots of cheering [from the different schools]”. She also mentioned that she “really enjoyed” the event and would do it again if given the chance.

One parent was also very pleased with how the day was run as the children were managed well by the teachers. She thought that the kids were having a wonderful time, and she was grateful to the organisers for arranging such an event. Overall, she saw it as “a fun day out”!

The event has proven to be successful in the past and has delivered in the unpredictable and nervy times of the pandemic – this is shown by how everyone involved enjoyed their time at the playing fields. It will hopefully continue to flourish for years to come!
