This Christmas tree, put up in Kew Village, signifies the beginning of the holiday festivities. As each winter comes around, many sit in wait for the beginning of the Christmas season. Mince pies, beautiful decorations, and joyous gifts are just some of the things we lie in wait for every year. This tree, and many other decorations springing up in the surrounding areas, signifies to some that the wait is over: the holiday season is here. For many, now is the time to begin preparing: to break out the advent calendars, decorations, and start blasting the Christmas music

However some say that the Christmas preparations start too early. It is just under a month till the day, however shops have been stocking up with Christmas decorations and food since late October. I remember remarking on Christmas decorations in shops before Halloween had even occurred. Some argue that Christmas starting too early makes the day less special, that if Christmas celebration becomes normal year round, it won’t hold the same charm. It can definitely be argued that celebrating for three months straight will definitely cause the holiday to become tired once December 25 arrives. Shops and and TV adverts promote the festive season so early, it can be difficult to resist getting involved sooner than you’d planned.

Does early celebration of the Christmas season take away from what makes the holiday so wonderful? Will early decorations and premature trees distract from what Christmas is all about: being with the people you love?
