As Christmas approaches, Teddington once again switches the lights on ready for the festive season.

The celebration began at 5pm on 25th November all along Teddington Broad Street, with the lights being turned on at 6:30pm, lighting up the whole street to announce the beginning of Christmas. Artificial snow began to fall and music played throughout the event, with people dancing, and even taking their turn to sing a Christmas themed song.

Along the high street there was a selection of stalls selling food including mulled wine, candy floss and churros along with an array of entertainment like fairground rides, large dressed up Christmas characters and karaoke! This Lights Up event was the perfect opportunity for small businesses to promote themselves to people along the high street by giving free samples, which many stores took advantage of.

Even though the weather was gloomy and cold, this family event became more and more lively as the hours passed, with one of the highlights being the two reindeer that were lying in a pen. People crowded around them as they lay and quietly took photos so as not to disturb them and they created a special, festive atmosphere.

Annie Martin (16) said, “I thought Teddington Lights Up had a real community feel to it. It was nice to see lots of people gathered together to celebrate Christmas in the local area, whilst also supporting local businesses.”

Overall this was a fun event that everyone should definitely attend if you want to get into the Christmas spirit! As it happens every year, make sure to come along in the years to come!
