Forty-five years ago, Gurdip Singh Chaggar was brutally murdered at the mere age of eighteen. Alongside being an engineering student, Gurdip was also a karate student and a keen hockey player. It had been the evening of Friday 4 June 1976 when Gurdip was going to the cinema with some friends, as he occasionally did. It was outside the cinema that the dreadful event of the stabbing had taken place. Gurdip had been stabbed by two youths, not too dissimilar from his own age, causing him many fatal injuries which lead to his death. The racially influenced murder caused a great deal of resentment within the Asian community as well as personally affecting such as friends and family members. The tragic death of Gurdip Singh Chaggar angered many people, provoking protests in Southall, mainly within the Asian community. The death of Gurdip touched many people, resulting in vast amaounts of people showing up at his funeral to pay their respects and to show their support during the very difficult time. Almost fort-three years later, in 2019, people of many different backgroungs came together to march against racism, which still stands as a very serious problem, to this day. The march took place in remembrance of Gurdip Singh Chaggar and Blair Peach, who had also been a victim of a racially influenced murder in Southall. The fact that the murder took place forty-five years ago, does not make it insignificant to any extent, and must be remembered,as racism still stands as a vast problem, not just within the community, but worldwide.
