On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, Croydon High School gathered for their annual remembrance ceremony. But this year, schools from across the Girls Day School Trust gathered on the netball pitches and participated in the ceremony.

“The act of remembrance at Croydon High School this year offered a poignant moment of reflection for all pupils.” said Mrs. Pattison, Headmistress of Croydon High School.

Our Headmistress led the remembrance, starting it by reading the poem ‘August 1914’ by May Wedderburn Cannan. Schindler’s List was then played beautifully by Charlotte, followed by The Last Post, played by Isla, Tallulah and Emily.

“To have the whole school gathered as we were listening to music, poetry and the last post before our period of silent reflection was incredibly moving.” Mrs. Pattison commented when asked what she thought of the memorial service held this year.

To commemorate the sacrifice these men made for us, pupils have been donating money to the Poppy appeal, and we have so far raised £165.09. We have been wearing poppies all week to remember the soldiers who gave their today for our tomorrow.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them. - Taken from ‘For The Fallen’ by Laurence Binyon.
