Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji (the sixth guru) was imprisoned in the Gwalior prison by Jahangir, the emperor at the time. Chandu Shah said to Jahangir his disease would only be cured if he let Guru Hargobind Singh Ji go as he was a spiritual being. Sai Mian Mir asked the emperor to release Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji and he agreed, yet Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji did not agree to leave. This is because 52 Hindu Kings were also imprisoned alongside Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. Therefore, Guru Ji wanted the 52 Hindu Kings to leave with him as well. However, the emperor said, “whoever can hold onto the Guru’s cloak will be allowed to go.” As a result of this, Guru Ji asked for a cloak to be made which had 52 strings so no one would be left out. Finally, Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji and the 52 Hindu Kings were released and they walked to Amritsar where candles were lit.

On the 4th of November 2021, Sikhs gathered in many gurdwaras ( a Sikh holy temple) in order to celebrate this moment that happened many years ago. They lit candles and fireworks to show the happiness within everyone as Guru Ji was released, listen to kirtan (hymns) to remember God and ate langar (free kitchen) which was served with humbleness. One of the Sangat said: “It’s amazing to see the Sikh community come together and celebrate Bandi Chorr Divas as last year there were restrictions in place yet it’s a blissful place to be in.”
