Motorists are facing significant disruption due to the planned temporary closure of a major route to and from the M25 in Epping Forest.

A notice from Essex County Council in this week’s edition of the Guardian details plans to close Volunteer Roundabout/Honey Lane/Skillet Hill and Dowding Way, Waltham Abbey, from the junction with Woodgreen Road to the junction with Sewardstone Road (including Skillet Hill), a distance of approximately 3169m.

The notice states the works will be undertaken within an 18-month period from October 21 and exact dates will be specified on

This website does not currently state when the works are due to take place.

The works will be undertaken in a phased manner and residents will be informed of the dates of each phase via letter/leaflet drop and advanced warning signs on the road.

In addition to the closures, temporary no waiting, no loading and no stopping restrictions will be introduced. Furthermore, the 7.5 tonne weight limit will be temporarily suspended in that length of Sewardstone Road/Crooked Mile from the junction with Sewardstone Roundabout to the junction with Crooked Mile Roundabout, and in that length of Honey Lane from its junction with Broomstick Hall Road to its junction with Old Shire Lane.

Plans are also detailed in the county council's notice for the closure of a section of High Street, Epping, from November 1 for traffic signal installation works

The road is due to be shut from its junction with St Johns Road to its junction with Grove Lane, a distance of approximately 390m.

Although the closure is scheduled to be in place for 27 days, it will last for only four nights within this period from 8pm to 6am.

During this time traffic should use High Street, High Road, Bury Lane, Lindsey Street, Church Hill, Palmers Hill and vice versa.

Elsewhere, part of Church Road, Waltham Abbey, is due to be closed for five days from Monday for water connection works.

The road is set to be shut from a point approximately 685m south-west of its junction with Mott Street for a distance of approximately 250m in a south-westerly direction.

The alternative route will be via Church Road, Lippitts Hill, Mott Street and vice versa.
