An elderly man is fighting for life after he was hit by a car outside Tesco Superstore in Elmers End.

The victim, in his 80s, was rushed to hospital in a life-threatening condition at around 1pm after being knocked down in the car park.

His next of kin has been informed. The driver of the car stopped at the scene.

Officers closed off access to the car park, allowing an air ambulance to land, as the victim was taken to a major trauma centre for treatment.

Enquiries are ongoing and road closures remain in place.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called at 1.08pm today (8 September) to reports of a road traffic collision involving a car and a pedestrian in a car park off Croydon Road, Elmers End.

"We sent an ambulance crew, a medic in a car, two incident response officers, and a clinical team leader. We also dispatched London's Air Ambulance.

"A man was treated at the scene and taken to a major trauma centre as a priority."
